WELCOMING THE NEW MEMBER ON THE BLOCK

Who are they? We are happy to announce that the Business Angels Association of Cabo Verde (ABAC) has joined the African Business Angel Network (ABAN).

This is an exciting and big move by ABAC, which aims to promote the Business Angels movement in Cabo Verde.

As a new member of ABAN, ABAC becomes part of the largest organized movement of the 60 Business Angel Networks in Africa, with privileged access to investment programs, funds and business angels from other countries to reinforce investment in Cabo Verde also in Africa.

This partnership will further ABAC’s plans to reinforce investment in businesses with high potential and relevant to the country’s development, including through the consortia of investors.

Their business strategy is to strengthen relations between investors and promote more business between people who share the same values and ethical conduct.

ABAC’s goal is to promote entrepreneurship and innovation, especially among youth and women in Cape Verde, allowing access to seed capital, management and business know-how, and strategic contacts and partnerships.

Let’s give a warm welcome to ABAC by following them on social media and looking for ways to invest in this budding market.

REGISTRATION IS NOW LIVE!

Have you attended any of the events on the continent this year? This is what went down at the AVCA conference in Senegal.

The AVCA 2022 Annual Conference was the first in-person industry gathering since 2019. And this year, the conference delved deeper for an open, honest conversation about the future of private equity and venture capital in Africa.

The delegates came from a network of over 500 delegates from more than 50 countries around the world.

One of the esteemed delegates, Director of Investments, Soros Economic Development Fund and Economic Advancement Program, Catherine Cax endorsed the conference saying, “In a sea of conferences and networking initiatives, AVCA has consistently been one of the top platforms over the past several years.

The conference attendees also got to listen and learn from over 80 speakers on pertinent issues impacting the industry.

Throughout the conference, our speakers explore the latest insight on opportunities and key trends in the industry.

While the industry has witnessed significant success stories across fundraising and deal-making, there are still challenges such as foreign exchange volatility, political instability, difficult regulatory environments, limited exit options, and the increasing trend of consolidation.

13 ABAN MEMBERS PART OF GROUND BREAKING $2BN FUNDING FOR AFRICAN STARTUPS IN 2022

Since January, startups in Africa have raised $2.25 bn in 2022, 2.5 times the amount of funding raised by the end of April in 2021 (5x 2020, 8x 2019).

This is big news because this amount has been raised by African tech startups in the first two months of 2022, more than half the amount raised in the entirety of 2021. The main sectors that received the bulk of the funding so far have been Financial Services, Services, Agriculture, and Mobility & Logistics.

Investment into the African tech startup ecosystem trebled over the course of a record-breaking 2021 that saw total funding pass the US$2 billion – and indeed the US$1 billion – mark for the first time. (Sources: Disrupt Africa and the bigDeal)

For the first 4 months of the year 2022, we are pleased to have a number of our angel networks participating in the total pool of capital raised by startups; that is Cameroon Angels Network (CAN), Botswana Angels Network, Accra Angel Network, Nairobi Business Angel Network (NaiBAN), Viktoria Business Angels Network (VBAN), Angel Network Botswana, Namibia Business Angels Network, The Cairo Angels, HIMAngel, AUC Angels, DRC Impact Angels, Gambia Angel Investors Network (GAIN), Dakar Network Angels (DNA), and Alexandra Angels.

Once again, as we kick off this new month, we look forward to greater collaborations and growth in the sector. Till next month,

Fadilah Tchoumba

Secretary-General, ABAN
